What is an AI harness
An AI harness is the software infrastructure layer that runs at runtime around a large language model (LLM). It supplies context, manages memory, brokers access to tools and enforces deterministic security and corporate governance rules.
In practice, it is what lets an AI agent run in a company with an owner, a policy, human approval and a record of every execution.
The equation
Enterprise AI agent = model + harness.
The language model reasons and writes. On its own, it does not know who asked, which data it may see, which systems it may touch or when to stop. All of that lives in the harness. That is why a company can switch models without rebuilding policy, approval and records.
Framework or harness
A framework is not a harness.
Frameworks such as LangChain, AutoGen and CrewAI are libraries for developers: they offer abstractions to build chains, agents and multi-agent conversations in code. The harness is the environment where those agents run in production, under the same rules for everyone: controlled state, role-based permissions and a record that cannot be edited afterwards. An agent built with any framework can run inside a harness.
| Aspect | Framework | Harness |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Developers | The company: IT, risk and business units |
| Delivers | Code abstractions to build the agent | A standard runtime where the agent executes |
| State and memory | Up to each project | Controlled and isolated per execution |
| Permissions | Written into each agent's code | Role-based rules (RBAC) applied to all |
| Human approval | Coded case by case | Approval gates defined by policy |
| Records | Optional logs, in each project's format | Audit trail of every execution, not editable afterwards |
Frameworks evolve, and some already offer persistence and checkpoints. The difference is who defines and enforces the rule: each project's code or a shared company environment.
Architecture
The four pillars of a harness.
Every enterprise harness solves four problems, in this order: what the model sees, how it iterates, what it may touch and who checks before the action.
- 01
Information and context
Decides what enters the model's window and separates instructions from data. Untrusted content, such as emails, web pages and third-party documents, is marked and isolated to reduce prompt injection, a technique known as spotlighting. It also controls context size and what is remembered between steps.
- 02
Reasoning (control loop)
Runs the plan, act and observe cycle. The harness enforces an iteration limit, a maximum time per task, a token budget and deterministic stop conditions. The rule decides when the agent stops, not the model.
- 03
Tool dispatch (MCP)
Connects the agent to CRMs, ERPs, legacy systems and APIs through a standard contract. The Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open protocol created by Anthropic, describes each tool and its parameters. The harness decides which tools each agent may call and with which data.
- 04
Control, verification and memory
Applies rules before every action: policy as code (for example, with Open Policy Agent), role-based access control (RBAC) and human-in-the-loop approval gates for irreversible or financial actions. Every execution produces an auditable record: who asked, what was done, which rule applied and who approved.
Before the harness
First, know where AI already is.
The Executive AI Diagnostic maps your company's AI uses, risks, invisible costs and priorities in 10 days. It is the blueprint for the harness.
Why now
The bigger risk is inside the company.
- 40%+
- of agentic AI projects may be canceled by the end of 2027 due to escalating costs, unclear business value or inadequate risk controls.Gartner, June 2025[1]Checked on
- 80%+
- of unauthorized AI agent transactions through 2028 will be caused by internal violations of enterprise policies (information oversharing, unacceptable use or misguided AI behavior) rather than malicious attacks.Gartner, Market Guide for Guardian Agents, February 2026, as quoted by Opsin Security[2]Checked on
- 42%
- of leaders have only partial visibility into AI spending.KPMG Global AI Pulse, June 2026[3]Checked on
- 41.7%

External attacks are the exception. Agents running without rules inside the company are the routine a harness controls.

Questions about AI harnesses.
What is the difference between a framework and an AI harness?
A framework is a library developers use to build the agent in code, such as LangChain, AutoGen or CrewAI. The harness is the environment where the agent runs in production, under the same rules for everyone: controlled context, role-based permissions, human approval and a record of every execution. One does not replace the other: agents built with frameworks can run inside a harness.
Is the harness compatible with the MCP protocol?
Yes. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) standardizes how an agent discovers and calls tools such as a CRM, an ERP or internal APIs. The harness sits between the agent and the MCP servers: it decides which tools each agent may use, asks for human approval when the policy requires it and records every call.
How does the harness prevent infinite loops and runaway token costs?
With limits that do not depend on the model: a maximum number of iterations per task, a maximum execution time, a token budget per agent and per period, and stop conditions defined in code. When a limit is reached, the execution stops, is recorded and the agent's owner is notified. Cost stops being a surprise on the invoice and becomes a rule.
Where do you start implementing a harness?
With an inventory of what already runs. Reveno's Executive AI Diagnostic maps in 10 days where AI has entered, the risks, the invisible costs and the priorities. With that map, the policy, the owners and the harness are designed for the cases that matter.
